More sacred polyphony from new group Continuum
  • This piece, Ribera's "Vox in Rama", has probably not been heard since the 16th century; it is a new performing edition by Bruno Turner, sung by London ensemble Continuum. Ribera was maestro at Avila Cathedral and taught the young Victoria. All of Continuum's performances of Spanish polyphony are at the original low pitch.

To hear Continuum singing Alonso Lobo's famous funeral motet "Versa est in luctum", here is the link:

  • Incredible that no wikipedia page exists for this person. There is a link to this page in spanish http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernardino_de_Sahagún but it seems like a different guy. Where is the best place to find out about him?
  • Jeffrey, I'd assume there would be some kind of entry in the New Grove Dictionary, but I haven't checked. Will post here if I find out there are more sources.
  • According to Bruno Turner, Ribera's surviving works include:

    Missa de Beata Virgine
    Missa cum versibus
4 Magnificats (to be sung in alternatim)
9 motets conserved in a great choirbook at Toledo Cathedral (due to vandalism of this book, only six are recoverable)

Besides the above videos, Continuum have also recorded Ribera's Salve Regina and made a video of Rex autem David, both editions by Bruno Turner. These will be available on youtube and on the group's website, which is in development.
