Music Workshop for New Translation with Msgr. Wadsworth in NY Tri-State Area

    On the afternoon of Wednesday June 22, sacred musicians of the Archdiocese of New York have been invited to meet with Msgr. Andrew Wadsworth, Executive Director for the International Committee on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) Secretariat, to discuss the new translation of the Mass that will be implemented in parishes later this year. The workshop is being held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scarsdale, and is part of the "Year for the Mass" initiative organized by the Archdiocesan Roman Missal Resource Committee.

    Msgr. Andrew Wadsworth is a world-renowned expert in liturgy and music. He will address the Archdiocesan musicians on the topics of the new translation of the Mass and its impact on music. Dr. Laurie Adamo and Andrew Bauer, two Archdiocesan parish music directors, will offer strategies to musicians to help them to introduce their congregations to the many new and revised musical Mass settings that are being composed to fit the new translation of the Mass. Publishers and composers of these works will be in attendance, and musicians will have the opportunity to meet with them and obtain sample scores and CDs.

    Music directors, choir members, cantors, and instrumentals from the Archdiocese of New York and neighboring dioceses are invited to attend this event.     Since some of us may soon have to sit through similar presentations, it may help to point out that Part 1 deals exclusively with general issues of translation, and part 2 with generalities about music in mass. Although ostensibly aimed at musicians, the "do it cheerfully" (or else) tone suggests an audience of PIPs. Part 3 has suggestions by Andrew Bauer (get the priest to sing; improvise on new settings; dont mix ordinary settings [why?]) and a teaching demonstration by Dr. Laurie Adamo-Ricigliano.
