As a music director at a parish, I've been carefully building a program away from liturgical pop music to sacred music, including chant and polyphony with quality choral singing. Our new pastor agrees that that this is a nice ideal but thinks that if we don't do enough Haugen/Haas/St. Louis Jesuits etc. attendance will suffer. I'm familiar with the amazing story of St. John Cantius in Chicago, but does anyone have further stories that I can share with my pastor to demonstrate that good music raises attendance?
