Beware the Ides

    The Ides of May, that is.

    The Ides of March have come and gone, at least this year, without major incident. Now the Ides of April are upon us. Well, the Ides of April is actually the 13th, not the 15th, but be that as it may: the IRS has established this deadline that shall not be moved forever (unless one lives in a federal disaster area).

    But another, far more important, deadline lies one month ahead, on the Ides of May. For, by this date, all composers attending the Colloquium must submit their scores for inclusion in the New Music Reading packet. And, unlike with the IRS, there are no deadline extensions until October.

    As I mentioned to Arlene shortly before Passiontide began: Now that all church musicians are through the rehearsals of Passion Week, the intense labor and services of Holy Week, and the necessary sleep of Easter Week, now they can get to work composing in Low Week. Finally write the motet on that text you've been ruminating over all throughout Lent! Put the finishing touches on that Agnus Dei! Do it, and do it soon! And when you're finished, send it to newmusic@musicasacra.com in PDF format (limited to 15 pages). As a reminder, you must be a registered participant of the Colloquium in order to have your work included. There is a $20 submission fee, payable by PayPal or by check to our programs office: CMAA Programs, 166 North Gay St., #19, Auburn, AL 36830. This is an unparalleled opportunity to have your work aired before a large group of like-minded sacred musicians from around the country and the world.

    Whatever you do, composers, do not, as it were, stand Ide-ly by.

    A friendly reminder: there is no CMAA Form 4868, Extension of Time to File. There have been some great scores coming in for the New Music Reading Session -- be sure that yours isn't left out! All requirements are above; once again, send them to newmusic@musicasacra.com. Tomorrow's the day!

    Mara: this is an opportunity for new composers just as much as for more experienced hands. Our composers are not just well-established, substantially-commissioned composers -- though we do have them, too. Submit scores on which you'd like to receive friendly constructive criticism, or that you've never yet heard performed. You won't regret it!
