Novena to begin this Friday

    Please remember to start saying the Novena in Honor of the Immaculate Conception this Friday, September 18th. We will conclude the Novena in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in the Upper Church of the Shrine on Friday and Saturday, September 25 and 26th.

    Also, please be advised that the EF Mass on Saturday, September 26 is a Votive Mass for the Blessed Virgin Mary and does not fulfill your Sunday obligation. You will need to consider other options for fulfilling your Sunday obligation when making your plans for the weekend. We will have a list of Mass times at the Shrine and neighboring churches available at the Pilgrimage for those of you coming from afar.

    If you cannot make the pilgrimage this year, please consider praying the Novena with us at home or in your parish. It is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to unite our hearts, minds and efforts in Christ through the intercession of Our Lady.

    I don't think that's correct. There can't really be any question about the time, 5 PM is later than many anticipated Sunday Masses.

    There's no requirement that the Sunday obligation be met by attending the Mass for the Sunday, it can just as easily be a Mass for the feast on Saturday, a ritual Mass, a votive Mass, or even a Mass in another Catholic rite (which may or may not be the Sunday liturgy anticipated.)
    Canon 1248 Section 1. The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day.
    It would of course be admirable from a spiritual perspective to attend the Mass for Sunday even if one has technically met the obligation on Saturday night with a votive Mass.

    * 12:30 p.m.; Saint Lawrence, 6222 Franconia Rd, Franconia, Va, 22310

    For Mass following the post-1970 Missal, there are many choices in the area, so I'll just note that the
    Solemn (Choral) Mass at the National Shrine is at 12:00 noon.
