Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Birmingham, Alabama.
  • This position comes available as I (Francisco Carbonell) have accepted the full-time appointment as Director of Music at EWTN. I look forward to remaining on this team in a part-time capacity but this growing parish definitively needs someone in a full-time Director of Music and Liturgy role. Below you can find the job description:

Saint Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church seeks a visionary, accomplished, and pastorally sensitive Director of Sacred Music and Liturgy to lead and develop a comprehensive program of Catholic worship, sacred music, and liturgical formation.

The Director provides overall leadership and oversight of the parish’s sacred music and liturgical life, fostering reverent worship, musical excellence, faithful liturgical practice, and active participation by the assembly. Working closely with the pastor, clergy, staff, musicians, and volunteers, the Director will build a cohesive, sustainable program rooted in the rich liturgical and musical tradition of the Catholic Church.

    Primary Responsibilities

Vision and Leadership: Develop and implement a comprehensive vision for sacred music and liturgy consistent with Catholic teaching, Church norms, and the pastoral priorities of Saint Mark. Establish departmental goals, evaluate programs, and promote a culture of prayer, collaboration, accountability, and excellence.
Staff Supervision: Lead and coordinate the Associate Director of Music, Associate Director of Liturgy, Assistant Director of Music for Children, and Artist-in-Residence/ Schola Cantorum Choirmaster. Establish clear responsibilities, oversee performance and professional development, and ensure effective communication and collaboration.
Sacred Music: Establish parish-wide standards for repertoire, preparation, and musical excellence. Oversee music for Sunday Masses, holy days, sacramental celebrations, and other liturgies. Promote congregational singing and the appropriate use of Gregorian chant, sacred polyphony, traditional hymnody, and other suitable sacred music.
Liturgical Planning: Collaborate with the pastor and clergy to ensure reverent, well-prepared celebrations faithful to the Church’s liturgical books and norms. Coordinate seasonal celebrations, including Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, and Easter, as well as weddings, funerals, and other sacramental liturgies as assigned.
Administration and Resources: Prepare and manage the departmental budget, oversee music purchases and licensing, coordinate schedules and contracts, maintain departmental resources, and recommend staffing and equipment needs.
    Departmental Structure

The Director will coordinate the following ministries:

Associate Director of Music: Parish-wide musical coordination, repertoire planning, rehearsal systems, musical standards, and coordination of musicians.
Associate Director of Liturgy: Liturgical planning, minister coordination, ceremonial preparation, sacristy management, and liturgical formation.
Assistant Director of Music for Children: Children’s musical formation, instruction at Little Lions Early Learning Center, and development of children’s music ministry.
Artist-in-Residence and Schola Cantorum Choirmaster: Musical leadership for the 12:00 p.m. Latin Novus Ordo Mass, direction of the schola, and development of sacred choral repertoire.
The Director will ensure that these ministries work together effectively in support of the parish’s worship and pastoral mission.
