Hildegard von Bingen and her music have been subject to all kinds of serious misunderstandings in recent years. The truth is, she was a devout Benedictine nun who chanted the Divine Office according to the Rule of Saint Benedict daily, she founded two convents, and Pope Benedict XVI declared her a Doctor of the Church. Her music and visions are firmly rooted in the Catholic faith, and almost all of her liturgical compositions (e.g. antiphons, hymns, and responsories) were intended to be sung as part of the Divine Office with her nuns. As evidence, the typical "e u o u a e" psalm tone differentiae are notated for many of the antiphons in her first codex.

We'll be exploring 3 chants from her Symphonia this Fall. Sessions will be 2 hours each, and delivered live via Zoom. Sign up for one session or for several.
