Don't think "hymns"...are only for the people
  • During this project I have become increasingly aware that some hymns are what I would call motets, though that may be a poor choice of words to describe what I am trying to say.

There are so many hymns that lend themselves to be sung by choirs or a small schola with great effect and impact on the people.

Hymns are not just for the people's active participation...with tongue in cheek.
  • Very true - and a great place for all those wild organ accompaniments!

It's also a really good way to introduce a new hymn to the congregation - singing it as an anthem a couple of times before asking them to join in.
  • Just think of all those great German chorales harmonized by Bach, or Johann Crueger, unfortunately found more often in an Anglican Hymnal than a Catholic.
