Friends, I wrote the following collection to make Gregorian chant and communion antiphons accessible to "contemporary" ensembles. It is called "Modern Communion Antiphons." I dubbed it "Where Gregorian Chant meets Praise and Worship."
Each setting is based on a well-known Gregorian melody, but is in the form of a simple song.
A few highlights: • Uses the exact Roman Missal translation of the Communion antiphons • Psalm verses are poetic renderings to match the tune and for ease of singing • Most follow a comfortable 16-bar structure that feels natural for singers • Works a cappella, with organ, or with piano/guitar • A gentle introduction to chant-inspired liturgical music for parishes not yet singing the propers • When an antiphon text is long, a portion of the text is used for the antiphon, and the full text is completed in the verse
Here are some of the chant tunes used: Pascha Nostrum (Easter Sunday), Psalm Tone 1 and Tone 8 formulas, Christus Vincit, Veni Creator Spiritus, the Missa de Angelis Kyrie and Sanctus, Tu Es Petrus, Ave Verum Corpus, Crucem Tuam, and an Alleluia from the Graduale Simplex.
