The Priestly Society of Saint Pius X, founded by His Excellency, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in 1970, is dedicated to the formation of holy priests using the time-honored methods of the Catholic church: the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass—“the Mass of All Time”—the use of sacred music in accordance with the instructions of Pope St. Pius X. Within this tradition, the Organist plays a vital role in upholding the dignity, beauty, and spiritual richness of the Church’s Traditional liturgy.
Responsibilities • Provide organ accompaniment for the Traditional Latin Mass two times per month, including preludes, postludes, hymns, and choral accompaniment as required. • Collaborate with the Music Director and clergy to select and prepare appropriate repertoire that reflects the liturgical calendar, feast days, and sacred seasons. • Accompany the schola or choir during scheduled rehearsals as needed. • Ensure the church organ remains in good working order and communicate any maintenance needs. • Offer right of first refusal to play for additional liturgies (Holy Days, weddings, funerals) for separate compensation. • Support the parish’s mission of fostering reverence and excellence in sacred music in harmony with the mind of the Church and the principles set forth by Pope St. Pius X.
Qualifications • Demonstrated proficiency in organ performance, with strong sight-reading and accompanying skills. • Familiarity with Gregorian chant, sacred polyphony, and traditional Catholic hymnody. • Experience accompanying the Traditional Latin Mass (Extraordinary Form) or willingness to learn its musical and liturgical structure. • Strong understanding of the liturgical year and the role of sacred music within Catholic worship. • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with clergy, choir, and staff. • A reverent and prayerful disposition, demonstrating devotion to the sacred liturgy and the musical heritage of the Catholic Church.

It’s too far of a drive for me, (I’m down in Kalamazoo) and I have my own gig on Sundays, but I’m willing to serve for special occasions if there is an evening mass on a day that doesn’t align with the novus ordo calendar. I’m sure it couldn’t be all the time, but if you’re ever in a real pinch for a an important vigil or something, reach out and we can talk.
