ALTO Professional Core Position, Pittsburgh Oratory
  • The St. Gregory Institute at the Pittsburgh Oratory is seeking an alto professional core member to serve as section leader in the Oratory Choir and Schola Gregoriana and to provide occasional vocal leadership with the Cantores Neri, a new ensemble for novice singers. Duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Attendance at weekly rehearsal (Thursdays, 7:00-9:00 p.m.) from mid-August through early June
    • Singing for Sunday Mass (10:15 a.m. call, 11:00 Mass) year-round; during the academic term, Mass is held at Heinz Memorial Chapel, on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh
    • Singing for the 5:15 p.m. Mass on major holy days
    • Serving as a cantor for two Saturday/Sunday Masses per month, in addition to singing with the Oratory Choir at the 11:00 Sunday Mass
    • Singing with Cantores Neri at the Friday 5:15 p.m. Mass not more than eight times per year

Applicants should possess superior capability in the following areas:

    • Sight-reading
    • Ensemble technique (blending)
    • Stylistic adaptability, including singing with little vibrato
    • Leadership, especially with student singers
    • Rendering solo repertoire convincingly, especially from the Baroque and Classical periods

Singers with significant experience with traditional Catholic sacred music, including Gregorian chant in “square note” notation and unaccompanied polyphony are especially encouraged to apply.
The Fathers of the Pittsburgh Oratory of St. Philip Neri are dedicated to cultivating excellence in sacred music, considering it an essential charism of Oratorian life. Consequently, the Pittsburgh Oratory maintains a robust program of sacred music (The St. Gregory Institute), featuring multiple choirs, a repertoire spanning the breadth of the Roman Catholic tradition, and significant emphasis on developing the next generation of church musicians. The demographics of the worshipping community and the sacred music program clearly reflect the Oratory’s primary apostolate—the administration of Catholic campus ministry for the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie-Mellon University, and Chatham University.
Professional Core Members are contracted, salaried employees of the Pittsburgh Oratory. The compensation package includes a $12,000 yearly salary, a generous paid time off package, and occasional bonuses. A full position description is available upon request. Interested parties should submit a curriculum vitae, a recording of a solo work, and two (2) letters of recommendation to:
