    The University of Notre Dame seeks an Artistic Director for choral music for its program in sacred music, Sacred Music at Notre Dame (SMND). We seek a conductor with national or international recognition and significant experience, or one who demonstrates a clear trajectory toward such recognition. The successful candidate will be an exceptional choral conductor, pedagogue, avid collaborator, and leader with a passion for excellence in church music. We are looking for a colleague with artistic vision and imagination who will help to build SMND’s national and international stature and contribute to shaping the future of choral activities at Notre Dame. The hire will maintain an active artistic profile and bring diverse perspectives and innovative approaches to conducting, pedagogy, and recruiting.

    Sacred Music at Notre Dame is an ecumenical graduate program in sacred music, with a Roman Catholic core and interdisciplinary study in music and liturgy. We offer two fully funded degrees: a Master of Sacred Music with concentrations in choral conducting (6 students), organ (6 students), and voice (8 students), as well as a Doctor of Musical Arts in choral conducting and Organ (3 students each). Our students interact with the greater South Bend community through the Notre Dame Children’s Choir and partnerships with local parishes and arts organizations. Our graduates serve in churches and cathedrals, schools and universities, and as performing artists in the public sphere.

    Job qualifications:

    Nationally recognized conductor with experience leading a choral program or ensemble

    Demonstrated achievement in research and creative activity, through choral conducting and/or publication

    Exemplary pedagogical skills and knowledge

    Experience administering a choral program at the university, professional, or festival level

    Experience in university level choral conducting



    Major duties:

    The successful candidate will maintain an active artistic profile

    Artistic directorship of SMND’s two choirs, Concordia Vocal Ensemble and Chamber Choir.

    The professional level chamber choir currently consists of 16-17 singers and is primarily conducted by the artistic director. Concordia, the primary choir for student recitals, consists of all 26 students in the program. Responsibilities for Concordia will include artistic and repertorial planning and conducting, determining student conducting and leadership opportunities, and student conducting assignments.

    Weekly one-hour private lessons for MSM and DMA students

    Weekly two-hour class with the full conducting studio

    Recruitment of new graduate students and additional ensemble members as needed

    Work collaboratively with all SMND administrators and faculty, including the Director of Notre Dame Children’s Choir and heads of the organ and voice studios

    Work collaboratively, as needed, with the directors of the undergraduate choral ensembles in the Department of Music (Chorale and Glee Club) and with the choirs of Campus Ministries.

    Arrange visiting artists for masterclasses and/or residencies

    Serve on DMA exam and thesis committees as needed

    Provide service to the Program in Sacred Music, the Department of Music, and the university


    The appointee must hold a DMA or equivalent degree or have completed all requirements for the DMA by June 2026.
