Is anyone aware of some good baroque-style chorale preludes for organ that use hymn tunes that are more modern (post-baroque)?
  • Consult the works for organ chorales by
Helmut Walcha and (you did say 'more modern')! Joseph Ahrens.
It is confusing as to whether you want 'baroque-style' or 'more modern' works.

I don’t think that it’s confusing: modern tunes but baroque-style chorales. Surely these exist.

That is precisely what I mean.

This is an area of interest for me. There is some overlap in tune from the past to the present, but not a whole lot. Perhaps you could list some tunes you'd be interested in having, and I could suggest some preludes?

Try looking at Denis Bédard's compositions. His Postlude on Woodlands has a Baroque-ish fugue.

Dr Kris Rizzotto just posted a rather delightful Trio on Here I Am, Lord, and has plenty of other hymn-related pieces in various styles.

Roland Bouman has pieces based on Pothier’s Tota pulchra es. Not exactly what you want but I love that hymn.

Am a massive fan. That trio is amazing even if, well…

Trio on Merton by David Thorne in the Oxford Advent / Christmas book is pure delight.
