Where or how to listen to liturgical hymns
  • I am a cradle Catholic and I absolutely love listening to hymns sung during mass (Jesus my Lord, my God, my All, I am the Bread of Life, etc). To my delight some of them were written by Beethoven, Bach, etc. But it is nearly impossible to find CDs or playlist that has these classic hymns that we sing during mass. Could anyone help me locate them on CD recordings, Spotify, Youtube or anything so I can listen to them at home? All I can find is protestant praise and worship songs or soft rock.

If you ask oldhymns, who is a forum member, he has a website The Devotional Hymns Project, he may be able to make a CD for you of the hymns you are looking for.

And if you would like to learn more about the author and composer's you can visit my website Mother of Mercy Catholic Hymns and click on the tab HYMN OF THE MONTH. I also offer a collection of Catholic hymns to St. Joseph.

  • That's an interesting couple of hymns you have listed there!

Catholic Classics / Devotional Hymns may well have Jesus my Lord... - but I'm pretty sure they won't have I am the Bread of Life.

However there ARE good recordings on Youtube, Spotify etc of all sorts of hymns. It trick is finding them.

If you are getting Protestant P&W / Soft-rock - then you need to change how you're searching. This is partly about knowing what to look for (hymn titles can be confusing) - and also looking at the YouTube (etc) channels of people who sing hymns you like.

For example this page has videos of lots of ways of singing I am the Bread of Life. Go from the page back to YouTube, and then click through into the signer or group's other videos.

Here are liturgical Hymns from the Office, the hymns sung at some Masses are not usually Liturgical as they are not part of the Liturgy. https://gregorian-chant-hymns.com/hymns-2/

  • OCP's hymn recordings are actually very lovely. Try searching for any hymn followed by "OCP" and you'll most likely see a green cover pop up. Their choir is nice.

  • The Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, at their Abbey of Ephesus in Gower Missouri produce many beautiful recordings. They probably don't have all the hymns that you're looking for, but their albums have many vernacular hymns, interspersed with elegantly done chant and lovely polyphony. Their style is rather light and floaty. Many of the hymns are written as hauntingly beautiful arrangements, their mother superior came from a musical background before pursuing religious life. There albums can be listened to for free on YouTube, or you can get CDs. They are also on other music streaming services, but I never use those, so I can't say how they work.

I've been listening to their Advent album the last few days: Advent at Ephesus

I confess that most of the hymns shared in the Catholic world from Anglican sources, and for me, with the melodies that I know, are nicely sung by Anglican choirs such that between Spotify and YouTube (both live and nice recordings) I get my fix.

    OMagMys (kinda cool handle?!)

    Nice music by the Benedictines!
  • Thanks, Francis.

If you even get the chance, visit them in person. They have a lovely sung Mass open to the public every day (to the best of my knowledge). It's not too far from the FSSP seminary in Nebraska if you're ever going for ordinations.
