Proulx Missa Simplex en Español
  • I have submitted a Spanish adaptation for Richard Proulx' Missa Simplex to GIA (they have the rights). It was approved and is currently in the process of preparation for release soon. https://giamusic.com/resource/missa-simplex-printed-music-11185

From time to time I sing at a Spanish Mass at my parish and have put this adaptation together with the hope of this being a good stepping stone to Gregorian chant for the Spanish speaking population. Hope this setting can help aid other Spanish speaking parishes. I am unsure of the exact release date but I am hoping for it to be available by Lent!

    I think that's a good idea!

Anything to make Spanish-language Mass music sound less like mariachi music is welcome!
  • It’s really nice to see some settings made available in different styles. They also accepted my Spanish mass which is for organ and choir (sample here). There have been so few settings in Spanish that are not a la mariachi.

I have a new organist friend who just moved here who is a transplant from Guadalajara. To my astonishment, he has some AMAZING music that is every bit what we'd hope fore (compared to the status quo) that is totally unknown outside of that region. The one difficulty, I think, might be that the translations of the ordinary might be slightly different. But the music is quite good. All organ-based and whatnot. Goes to show this music should (and does, in fact) exist and that it is authentically liturgical and compatible with hispanic liturgical sensibilities.
