Masses for Lower Male Voices
  • I'm looking for some high quality (preferrably polyphonic, although I'm open to more contemporary works ala-Durufle et al) Masses written for lower male voices. The highest voice can be a countertenor, so if you know works that are scored for ATTB, they're fine too. I'm also not averse to taking a decent polyphonic Mass by Palestrina or Victoria (and others) and just transposing it down a fifth (this worked very nicely with Victoria's Tenebrae Responsories, which taken on a certain 'dark' and mysterious quality).

So, folks - Any ideas? I was completely blown away (and still am) by Pekiel's 'Missa Brevis', so if you know of any other works of this quality, please post!!!

Tallis's Mass for Four Voices is wonderful when sung at the "original" pitch.

Same with the 3 voice Mass.

Ropartz has a Mass that's STBB. It's not on CPDL, I heard it on Naxos.
  • Thanks, Sam. The choir has sung the Tallis Mass for Four Voices in the past, and it really is an excellent piece of music.

Gavin - where could I find the Ropartz Mass?
