Here are my thoughts:
You're writing two-part music, so let the two parts speak independently. Have one part enter and be led (or followed) by the other, or even trade places occasionally. Allow more stretches caused by suspensions and resolutions. Allow the parts to overlap, if the voices you're using allow such a thing.
