Since we are approaching the year B John 6 Eucharistic Discourse through the month of August, do any of you have ideas for appropriate organ music for these Sundays?
I know of a few things ... Messiaen's "Heavenly Banquet", and some settings by Gerald Near based on Adoro Te Devote and Ave Verum Corpus ... but other than that, what is there? Help me jog my memory if you can ... It seems to me that Langlais, Widor, and Dupre, et al must have done some settings that are Eucharistic in nature.
Leon Boellmann (Twelve Pieces opus 16 n 8) Lento e molto sostenuto Verset de procession sur "Adoro te" (Twelve Pieces opus 16 n 9) Tempo di marcia Verset de procession sur "Adoro te"
Theodore Dubois (Twelve Pieces for Organ 1892) La Fete-Dieu in C Major "Lauda Sion"
Alexandre Guilmant (L'organiste liturgique opus 65) (bk 4 n 5) Deux Strophes sur l'hymne "Pange lingua gloriosi corporis mysterium" (bk 4 n 6) Deux Strophes et Amen sur l'hymne "Sacris solemniis" (bk 6 n 3) Elevation "Ecce Panis" (bk 6 n 4) Autre Elevation "Ecce Panis" (bk 6 n 5) Strophe sur l' Hymne "Pange lingua gloriosi corporis mysterium" (bk 8 n 1) Offertoire sur l'hymne "Adoro te devote" (bk 8 n 2) Elevation ou Communion dans le style de J S Bach sur l'hymne "Adoro te devote" (bk 8 n 3) Sortie sur l'hymne "Adoro te devote" (bk 8 n 4) Strophe no 1 5e ton transposee une quarte plus bas sur l'hymne "Adoro te devote" (bk 8 n 5) Strophe no 2 choral dans le style de J S Bach sur l'hymne "Adoro te devote" (bk 8 n 6) Strophe no 3 choral dans le style de J S Bach 5e ton sur l'hymne "Adoro te devote" (bk 8 n 7) Strophe no 4 Andante sur l'hymne "Adoro te devote" (bk 8 n 8) Strophe no 5 Allegro moderato sur l'hymne "Adoro te devote" (bk 10 n 4) Strophe pour l'hymne "Sacris solemniis"
Nicholas de Grigny (Premier Livre D'Orgue 1699) three versets on "Pange lingua" (Premier Livre D'Orgue 1699) four versets on "Verbum supernum (prodiens)"
Jean Titelouze (Complete Organ Works 1623 Vol 1 Hymns) three versets on "Pange lingua"
Let me add one piece to the above Guilmant list: "Communion on 'Ecce panis angelorum' " from "L'Organiste Pratique," Vol. V, Op. 59, no. 3. It's based on the final portion of the Corpus Christi sequence. A lot of Guilmant's stuff is pleasant, but no more. This piece, however, is a hidden gem. You can make it work on two manuals, but it asks for three.
Marcel Dupre (Sixteen Chorales opus 38 n 10) Pange lingua
Alexandre Guilmant (L'organiste pratique bk 12 opus 59 n 2) Elevation "O salutaris hostia" (L'organiste pratique bk 12 opus 59 n 3) Communion "Ecce panis angelorum"
Charles Callahan (Triptych) three settings of "Adoro te devote" (Five Improvisations opus 74 n 2) Adoro te devote (Five Improvisations opus 74 n 3) Adoro te devote (Five Improvisations opus 74 n 5) Pange lingua (Chant Vol 1) two settings of "Adoro te" (Chant Vol 1) one setting of "Ecce panis angelorum" (Chant Vol 1) two settings of "Pange lingua"
