Palm Sunday Solemn High Mass

THEODULPH) Upon Entering the Church - Ingrediente Offertory Motet - Adoramus Te, Christe, Dubois Communion Hymn - Glory Be to Jesus (CASWALL) Communion Motet - The Reproaches, Victoria, with Palmer-Burgess chant interpolation Closing Hymn - O Sacred Head, Sore Wounded (PASSION CHORALE) Postlude - Meditation on Passion Chorale, improvisation
We did nothing special, only adding on to what we did for Lent.
Asperges Me (mode IV) Mass XVII (Kyrie, mode I, with Benedicamus Domino, mode VI for the ease of the celebrant) Propers for the blessing of palms as in the Liber Usualis. We sang the Hosanna, Filio David; In Monte Oliveti; Sanctus XVIII; the two antiphons Pueri Hebraeorum; Occurunt turbae (the procession was inside in our chapel); Gloria Laus et Honor (three or four verses only); Ingrediente. Mass propers (due to the Passion being sung with assistance from the schola, we did the psalm tone for the verse of the Gradual and the tract. Next year, we'll hopefully do the full tract of Lent I, Palm Sunday, and Good Friday) Ave Regina Caelorum (simplex) with verse and collect.
I'm not a fan of hymns on Palm Sunday, but the people love "O Sacred Head, Surrounded," and they sing it well.
We've been doing the mode I Kyrie, and I need to remember that singing it up an octave from what the organist thought was best is the way to go. The people will be more participatory next year; we do mode VI in Advent, but I suggested doing the mode I for Lent. This is what the ICRSP does at the seminary; in a perfect world, we'd do the simpler mode VII Asperges in Advent as well.

Entrance: Vexilla regis prodeunt and Hosanna Filio David, in plainchant. Distribution of the palms: antiphons Pueri hebraeorum, with psalm verses (one of the only genuine improvements of Pius XII's reform in my opinion). Procession: various antiphons, psalm 147 (with the famous "Hosanna (x3) Filio David" by Canon Noël Darros) and Gloria Laus, all in plainchant. Entrance: Ingrediente Domino and the introit Domine, ne longe, in plainsong. Kyrie: XVII. Gradual: Tenuisti, sung in a polyphonic setting by Thomas Tallis (!). Tract: Deus, Deus meus, in falsobordone. The Passion was read in French (the same with the Gospel before the procession and the Epistle). Credo I. Offertory: Improperium, in plainsong. Motet: Aestimatus sum, Roland de Lassus. Sanctus: XVII. After the Consecration: Adoramus te, Christe, Quirino Gasparini. Agnus Dei: XVII. During Communion: Miserere mei, Deus, Allegri. Communion antiphon: Pater, si non potest, in plainsong. Recessional: "Ô Croix dressée sur le monde", a French canticle, sung on a Breton melody.
Kind of surprised that no one did the Malcolm Ingrediente or the Weelkes Hosanna... two of my all-time favourites. Ours was fairly simple as my choral forces were fairly limited. Hymns All Glory Laud and Honour (with improvised fanfare), Holy Jesu by thy Passion, My Song is Love Unknown, When I survey the wondrous Cross. Missal chant Hosanna (Latin), Gregorian Communio. I had to stay and thurificate for the next Mass as well which was sadly a guitar Mass. But man, did I ever get the thurible going... a beautiful haze lasted in the church for over an hour after that Mass. The incense blend was one I made myself.
This thread calls to my mind perhaps the greatest composition of the late Russell Woollen, his Ingediente Domino, written sometime in the late 1950's, I believe. I used it a few times when I was directing choirs in the early 1970's. Perhaps those unfamiliar with the piece might wish to resurrect it. I think Woollen captures the text in a far superior way than does George Malcolm.

Seems perfectly in keeping to me. I wish the verse about the sun refusing to shine were included. That's such an elegant, oblique reference to our Lord's death.
Chris: It's the proverbial bone thrown. I think if I didn't do it, I would be crucified myself. @NihilNominis: If I did it at a time other than the end, I probably would have included that verse. Since it was the closer and people tend to flee faster than Jesus' disciples at the Mount of Olives, I had to pick and choose. I'm doing Were You There again on Good Friday during Communion, and I include it there.
