What is the most ancient of the 18 mass settings?
  • Also is there a reasonably accessible (to an intelligent non expert) text that provides a historical framework of the provenance of these settings (and others)? When and where they likely arose etc? To the extent any of this can be known.

David Hiley's article Kyriale in New Grove has a short bibliography that could be a starting point, but Richard Crocker's articles on Kyrie, Gloria in excelsis &c. go into much more detail.

  • Thanks Richard. In what periodical do Richard Crocker's articles appear? Available on Academic.edu?

Not a periodical but an encyclopedia: the 1980 New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians was the successor to several 'old' Grove's. The updated version, Grove Music Online, is now merged with Oxford Music Online. I have access via my local public library card, but I still sometimes like to curl up in an armchair with the old volumes.
