Last week, I noticed that just inside the cover of my copy of "Lord, For Thy Tender Mercy's Sake," which I was preparing for choir rehearsal, a previous owner of the score had written an important reminder:
All punctuation, and especially comas, should be observed just as in speech. Doing so makes the words and grammatical structure clear and immediate. It is also fun. and educational to both performers and hearers. Not doing so is simply sloppy, lazy, and careless.
