My Soul Rejoices in My God
  • This is my first real attempt at composition. The only setting I had for the 3rd Sunday Advent was Owen Alstott's from R&A. I started to play around on the piano when the tune I Sing A Maid (text MD Ridge and tune by Michael Joncas based on the celtic melody Flight of the Earls) popped into my head. I made the refrain the last phrase of the 14 14 14 14 song.

I have never waded into composition but have been yearning to get my feet wet the past few years. (I struggle looking for music that is both accessible to my choir but also sacred and not pop or rock based.)

I am not sure this piece really fits the bill for a responsorial psalm in form- it feels too much like a solo because it is based off a hymn, perhaps- but I am happy with my first attempt to adapt music for the liturgy.

This is just a starting point but I would love your thoughts on how to move towards writing music for liturgy or adapting music for your own parish's needs.

Edited to add: I forgot the key signature after the first line.
