    Two things that may be of use for Christ the King (NO) next week.
    - Laudes regiae (Latin/English with organ) pulled from Marier's Pius X hymnal (thank you to Corpus Christi Watershed)
    - Christus vincit (trad./Montani) with Psalm 116 set to the Ton Royal

    I have yet to see the 'tradition' of the second tune pushed back further than Aloÿs Kunc (1832-1895), since he was a fervently royalist Frenchman, one could guess at around 1870.

    The arrangement of Kunc’s melody in four-part harmony by Nicola A. Montani inflates the composition in a pseudo-Verdi style which is beyond criticism.

    How far back does it have to go to be “traditional?”

    'traditional' depends on context, I think. Three years suffices for a student tradition at an american college, liturgical practice a good deal longer. Here we have a chant established by 800 for the Holy Roman Emperor, and in the Norman 'empire' adopted in 1035 by William 'le Bâtard'.
