    The Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama is currently seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Diocesan Director of Music. The Director is a member of the staff in the Office of Sacred Liturgy and directly reports to the Vicar for Sacred Liturgy. The Office of Sacred Liturgy exists in support of the Bishop as “chief steward of the mysteries of God and the guardian, promoter and overseer of the liturgical life” of the Church of Birmingham in Alabama.

    The Diocesan Director of Music directly assists in the ongoing formation of liturgical musicians with the diocese and the development of choirs and/or ensembles for diocesan liturgies. He/She will collaborate with the Office of Sacred Liturgy staff for the proper implementation and celebration of liturgy in the diocese in accordance with the norms of the liturgical documents. The sacred music programming should also reflect an awareness and appreciation of the numerous cultures represented in the Diocese of Birmingham.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Chair the Subcommittee of Sacred Music (sub-committee of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission)
    • Creatively assist in the administration and musical direction of diocesan choirs for both adults and youth
    • Creatively advise and assist with the sacred music education/certification initiatives of the diocese
    • Assist with planning, preparation, and execution (as organist and/or director) for diocesan liturgies
    • Act as contractor/liaison with the professional music community for diocesan liturgy
    • Serve as music consultant/resource for the ongoing musical needs of diocesan parishes and entities
    • Maintain a substitute musician and open employment database


    Qualifications
    This position requires a master’s degree in sacred music or comparable education and experience as well as strong proficiency in choral conducting and vocal performance. Organ skills are also essential. Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills would be a tremendous asset.
