The current issue (May 2009) of Homiletic & Pastoral Review includes this article by W. Patrick Cunningham on the essential role of sung participation by the clergy. And he observes how any sung statement by the clergy is readily responded to "in kind" by congregants who won't utter a peep despite all the blandishments of song leaders, cantors, and choirs.
The essay also includes an interesting suggestion that "active particpation" be replaced by "engaged particpation," a phrase that would recognize the interior aspects of worship as well as the exterior.
The article is short and readable - and one you might want to draw to Father's attention.
Cunningham: "Those entrusted with leadership in sacred music, especially bishops and priests, need to understand the theological underpinnings of that conviction, and then implement the direction after suitable catechesis."
