Mass on Maui?
  • Hi all,

Does anyone have thoughts on a nice parish to attend while vacationing on Maui?

    Thank you!

I've gone to Mass at St. Theresa in Kihei. If you're staying in that area, it's the most convenient option. Large church, easy to find parking. Mass there is a little touristy, though. Little aloha girls did an interpretive quasi-hula dance after Communion and the choir had a strong Hawaiian flavor in its performance style. Not a bad church or Mass, pretty run-of-the-mill for suburban America but with a Hawaiian twist. Oh, the church has air conditioning, which weighs very strongly in its favor.

I also visited the parish in Lahaina, but not for Mass. If you are staying in Kaanapali, it would be much closer than any other parish, but finding parking would be very difficult because it's in a tiny downtown area with lots of shops. It's also a very tiny church. There is a small mission church served by this parish in Kapalua, which is even closer to Kaanapali.

I also stopped by Christ the King in Kahului, but not for Mass. Plenty of parking, big church, but serves locals more than tourists because it's in a residential neighborhood instead of a tourist district. Except I think this parish gets the cruise ship Mass goers because it's closest to the harbor.

There are other, much smaller parishes too around the island, but the parishes in Kihei and Lahaina/Kapalua mission church would be closest to the major tourist resort areas. I stopped at just about all of Maui's parishes when I was driving around the island. But I've only ever gone to Mass at St. Theresa in Kihei because that's where I was staying.

If you are driving through Paia, stop by the St. Damien of Molokai shrine at Holy Rosary parish.

Drive to the summit of Haleakala! Don't just visit the beaches.
