SAB Marian motets?
  • Hello all,
I was asked to put a Mass together for the Immaculate Conception for a 3-voice choir (Soprano, Alto, men) of not very experienced voices. I'm having a hard time finding easy Marian motets for SAB, or other voicings that can be sung as SAB. I have a few in mind, but I'd love to hear your recommendations. I'll also look at SATB, but the tenor voice can't be too high, and again, must be easy.
    Thanks!
  • Is this a cappella or is organ accompaniment allowed?

  • Monteverdi's Ave Maria meets your criteria, I think.

A capella! Sorry for not clarifying
  • Although in 4 part, I think you could certainly sing O Sanctissima and Ave Maris (Ett) in three... There is also the Magnificat 3 part faux bourdon by Grassi. (The attachment is mis-labeled. The first page is 8G simple, the second is 8G solemn - we frequently substitute this in during vespers for the Magnificat when the antiphon is 8G in either tone.)

In Paschaltide, a SAB Regina Coeli Iubila...

All of these are reasonably simple.

The Arcadelt is pretty darn easy.

I know you said a cappella, but if you ever use accompaniment with this group of inexperienced singers of somewhat limited skill-level, might I recommend something like The Oxford Book of Easy Flexible Anthems? Other possibilities are Rossini's collection for SA/TB groups called Canticum Novum and his Oremus: 50 Motets for the Liturgical Year for soprano, alto, and baritone with organ.

There is a lovely Faire Motet that is Marian, however I think it just two voices. Its on cpdl.
  • Don't be afraid to add on organ stop playing a missing voice in an SATB piece, carefully added and balanced, people will not even notice it was there. Historically permitted and encouraged in the past.

    1) This simple SAB Magnificat by Mariano Garau is quite lovely.

    2) O Sanctissima by Kevin Allen is also beautiful.

    3) This SSA version of Grieg's Ave Maris Stella may also have some possibilities:
