Idea for an organ work in memoriam Charles Culbreth

I have an idea for a set of variations (organ) on a hymn tune in memoriam Charles Culbreth, which I would like to be a collaborative work (like some of Sweelinck's chorale variations) with colleagues and friends from CMAA.

The first decision would be what hymn to use--I have thought of Gelobt sei Gott (Vulpius), Lobe den Herren, Old Hundredth, Veni Creator Spiritus, but haven't made a decision yet. Input on this would be helpful--particularly if anyone knows a tune that Charles was fond of.

Once that first hurdle has been cleared, it will be up to anyone who is interested to write a variation or two and post here. Then they can be assembled together and published.
  • A laudable project, to be sure. I wish it well.

Didn't he compose? Perhaps he's written a hymn tune.
  • How about the tune to O Welt, ich muss dich lassen?
    It hath a noble pedigree.

So, I've decided on O Welt, Ich muss. For the sake of consistency: F Major; basic pulse in quarter notes (i.e. in Common Time).
