It would also be handy to have the days of Burial as well, then we can arrange Anniversary Requiem Masses (EF) on either of those days (If permitted by the Rubrics).

We have been arranging 1st and 10th Anniversary Requiems for members of our community.

If you add names, would you please place them in sequence according to month and day?
  • Don't forget Guido of Arezzo -
who said that everyone who used his newly invented staff (which made it possible to learn in two years what formerly took ten ) would be so grateful for it that they would pray for his soul.
Pray for Guido. Where would we be without Guido's staff?
(And, it never hurts to remember the faithful departed who left us our treasured musical patrimony.)

Batch one for me, will be back with more. Added Kenneth Blue, my first organ teacher, Dr. Robert "Bob" Schaffer, for half a century director at the Cathedral Basilica in Covington, KY (and father of the current director), Dr. Helmut Roehrig, also of Cincinnati, director at Christ the King, professor of music at XU, and founder of the Musica Sacra chorus, and finally Harold R. Conti, for fifty years organist at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Massillon, OH.

Still looking for a date for my predecessor at my present parish, and several composers.

  • Gamba,

Please tell us if Mr. Conroy was your immediate predecessor!
If he were, this would constitute two Organist/Choirmaster persons in nearly 100 years.

No, not immediate, but thank God, the last predecessor to have passed away. He was followed by a series of interims, then the position was split for a time into DoM/organist, and my immediate predecessor as organist served from 1971-2017. Now the positions are again combined, but nevertheless, there has been amazing continuity, with the gorgeous 1890 organ escaping the five or ten replacements one would expect over 120 years.
  • Wow. 38 years on the job is the second longest tenure in the post! See you some time in the 2050s, at your retirement party. On the one hand it must be daunting to take over from someone who has been in the position that long, but on the other hand, if a good thing was in progress, momentum is in favor of continuing a good thing.

Between Incardination's and StimsonInRehab's recent entries, at least one previously entered name has dropped out. I hope that the currently brought forward list is not the continuing standard.

Another note: this could expand limitlessly if we were to add renowned composers, to the point where it would become unusable; it started as personal remembrance of our dear departed colleague Melofluent.
  • Having started the thread, it actually began as a remembrance of ALL those who have served liturgical music, not simply in remembrance of 1 or 2 particular friends. Fortunately, the Mass is an infinite supply of grace, not limited to X names. It is also why I listed composers separately - people can choose to include or exclude as they wish. I added these composer names in particular since they are the ones in use by my choir. If a musician from centuries ago is in hell or in heaven, that won't diminish what is available to others - if they are still in purgatory, how welcome it would be to have someone remember them in prayer!

The idea was to have a baseline of liturgical musicians which others could customize for their own particular situations. For example, I've asked my choir to provide names of those departed from friends and family which I append to the baseline in my own situation.

WGS, I simply recopied the list from the previous entry (from Caleferink). If you know of an entry that fell off, please specify - I'll do my best to go back to the most complete list of names.

    EDIT:

Stim, looks like you accidentally missed the first name in the list. Here is the list with your entry also (WGS, if you note someone else who fell off, please specify):

  • Thank you - it wasn't intentional by any means.
  • In your charity, please pray for the repose of the soul of Meri Dell Ridge, a colleague, writing and composition partner, hymnist of extraordinary talent, and grievously missed friend, who left us suddenly on June 5, 2017. I am grateful to see my friend, Felix, listed here. And I am grateful, if grieved to see another friend and teacher and mentor listed here.

Fortunately, the Mass is an infinite supply of grace, not limited to X names.

The Mass is unlimited, but the time people have available for specific remembrances is not.
  • The Mass is unlimited, but the time people have available for specific remembrances is not.

Hence the advantage of a typed list that is placed in an envelope on the altar gradine, to which the celebrant makes reference - as in "and all souls indicated here". Clearly one would not expect a priest to read through all the names on the list...

If you would be using it in that way, as in intercessions, one suspects that any list beyond a few souls from within the parish would be too many... but since the list can be edited quite simply (I will be adding to ours, for example), I don't really see the point you are trying to make.

Thanks for explaining how you envision using the list. Somehow I had no idea!

We should also add Holger Peter Sandhofe but does anyone know the date of his death 2004/2005?
  • Added Holger Sandhofe without a date for now (tried finding an obit, but without success), as well as Mary Berry and Fr. Faber:

Ah, but God knows who they all are (the larger list). One's prayer for them need not detail every last name.

Once, when checking in for a retreat, I asked the housekeeper to pray for me. She said, "I will."
I said, you probably get that request a lot, and she replied, oh yes, through each year, many hundreds. I asked, how do you manage to remember them all?
She smiled and said, You know, I used to stress over it, this name and that. Now, whenever someone asks me to pray for them, I immediately commend them to Our Lady. Then when evening comes, and the household gathers for the Rosary, I turn to her and say, "you remember all those people I mentioned to you?"
  • Remember the old Muslim proverb: "Man forgets, but God remembers."
  • What a terrific list. Before cantoring, I routinely ask for help from a few particular saints, then all of my ancestors and their descendants/collaterals, especially those who were musicians. (They have never failed me yet.) Now, I can also ask all those on this list!

If the list will be maintained for future use, and is not strictly limited to membership here, I would like to add one of my most valued conductors/teachers: William Ferris, 16 May 2000 (funeral 20 May). https://liturgicalleaders.blogspot.com/2008/11/william-ferris.html
  • Added William Ferris... (anyone can add to the list, just informationally).

(On, my phone, so copy/paste not an option.)

Perhaps we should add Bishop Robert Morlino (24 November, 2018)---though not (as far as I know) himself a musician, he was a great supporter of Traditional liturgy and music.
