The first part is composed in the Lydian mode. The effect of the Augmented fourth gives it the ethereal sense of reaching heavenwards. The extended 2/4 measures give the sense of being suspended in time while the melodic sequence also reinforces a stair step of prayer rising to Our Blessed Mother as each phrase begins a major second above the previous.
