I'm hoping some of you might be able to provide any suggestions about how to approach my chant technique anew in light of the dreaded diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux, from which I am recovering.
As I'm eagerly seeking to resume my chanting, is there anything that approximates to a correct technique in order to place as little strain on the voice as possible?
If anyone can provide some thoughts I'd be very appreciative.
Hello Giovanni, it would be best to consult with a voice professional. This could be a well trained choir director or a (classical) voice teacher. There is no “correct” vocal technique for chant - as we might say bel-canto for opera or “belting” for broadway. Any vocal technique that allows the chant to be sung beautifully and musically is appropriate. Private lessons with a voice teacher will help you discover the unique beauty of your own instrument and give you vocal tools to combat the effects of the reflux on your voice.
