Several years ago in college I was at a parish on Good Friday. The responsorial psalm they sang had a Middle Eastern for a lack of better words sound. It also had some foreign language component. I think it was Hebrew. It wasn't Latin. I had heard it was version from U. of Notre Dame. Does anyone have any ideas what I'm looking for? Thanks
Are you remembering the Reproaches (English) or Improperia(Latin)? Something like this parts of which are in Greek. They are sung during the veneration of the cross.
Or page 25 of this, with its Eastern-(well, some kind of chromatic phrygian mode)-sounding response? But no indication of the psalmists's part, so no indication of its language. The response is English, of course.
It (and much else) is by Prof. Calvin Bower, whose liturgical music has however not been published, I understand.
