    REVIEWS. Hymnals.
    [...]
Probably the most encouraging feature of the Church music reform movement in this country is the great improvement in the general character of the Hymnals issued since the "motu Proprio" was promulgated.
    [...]
That the cheap and tawdry musical style so often found in many of the old hymnals is gradually becoming obsolete, is a matter of artistic satisfaction, for it means that the Convents and Academies under whose auspices many of these hymnals were published, are no longer willing to be responsible for the dissemination of a type of music unworthy of rendition in the church and school.

  • I'm dredging this thread up to ask a question.
HathiTrust has the run of this journal through 1950, but everything after V. 5 is behind the copyright wall.
The Society of St. Gregory merged with the Caecilians to form CMAA.
There's no problem with CMAA hosting the Caecilia, because it holds the copyright.
It also holds the copyright to Catholic Choirmaster.
That being the case, is there anything that could be done to grant Hathi permission to make these issues available to all? Or would there be a way to host their digitizations here?

We'd love to host the archives of these journals here, and have no objection to HathiTrust making all of The Caecilia and Catholic Choirmaster available at their site too.

  • Let me see if there's anything I can do to "make it so." We're a Hathi institution here, but I have no interaction with them. Does anyone else have an in with them?

  • Many years ago, I once sent an email to them to ask why a particular book was unavailable (at least to me, outside the US) given that it was public domain in the country of origin (I think I mentioned German or French laws, since the author came from the one or the other). They opened the book to the public rather fast IIRC and wrote something to the effect that they were happy to do so in other cases I might know of. I no longer have that email, but I believe I simply used the email address from “Contact“, i.e. feedback@issues.hathitrust.org
