Votive Antiphon - Regina caeli (a 8) - - - F. Guerrero
Hymn - 'Hail Thee, Festival Day' - - - Salva festa dies
Organ Voluntary - Choral varie sur le theme du 'Veni Creator' - - - M. Durufle
(About that 'fancy' voluntary at the beginning - as most are probably aware, 'fancy' or 'fancie' or such when encountered in English renaissance music is short for 'fantasia', pronounced fan-ta-see-ah.)
At pontifical high mass this morning the following were offered to our God -
Organ Voluntary - Improvisation Palmer-Burgess' propers, with Sequence (in its historical place!) Ordinary - Willan Vidi aquam - - - Chant, Norris Psalm CIV - Benedic, anima mea - - - Chant, Wllm. Turle Alleluya and Verse - - - T. Marier A Variety of Renaissance and Modern Motets during Confirmations. Lotti Organ Voluntary - Komm, Heiliger Geist, Herr Gott - - - J.S. Bach
We also sang Lambuillotte (?!) at the Entrance, and Abbot's Leigh at the Dismissal.
As on all solemnities, all three readings were sung.
We had 27 adult and children confirmands.
The children wore white on this confirmation day - whence 'Whitsunday', or 'Whitsun'.

The Te Deum was appropriate as it was the last Mass for several of us, myself included, following commencement. While the principal organizer for the musicians is staying for his MA, it’s definitely the end of an era, because there has been a core group of students serving and singing for the traditional Mass at Franciscan University and in the area, and we’ve now basically all been replaced by new undergraduates! So, pray for them please. It’s been very good. Who would have thought Pontifical High Mass with Cardinal Burke would be sponsored by FUS even though it wasn’t in Christ the King? Not I! It was a pipe dream three years ago. It’s also been incredibly challenging. The people are mostly in place. It just takes an act of the will to overcome the fears. So, pray for my alma mater.

St. Mary's in Independence, MO Our Three Ordinary Form Masses: Entrance Hymn: Come Holy Ghost (Lambilotte) Introit: from Lumen Christi Missal At two of the Masses we used the complete Mass VIII (Missa de Angelis) and at our "High Mass" we did Mass I (Lux et Origo). Missa de Angelis accompanied by organ; Lux et Origo a cappella We did the Latin Sequence from the GR. Responsorial Psalm and Alleluia from Lumen Christi Missal. Offertory Hymn: O Breathe on Me, O Breath of God Communion Hymn (at the two non-"High Masses"): Come Down, O Love Divine Communion Choral piece (at "High Mass"): Beata Nobis Gaudia, by Lajos Bardos Communion Proper - full Latin Proper from Graduale Romanum (used Communio from this site) At our parish we sing the seasonal Marian antiphon right before the closing hymn, so we did Regina Caeli (simple tone). Closing Hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy Organ Postlude - an abbreviated version of Bach's Prelude in D major, BWV 532.
At our evening Extraordinary Form Missa Cantata: Propers: all of the full Latin propers from the Graduale Romanum Mass I (Lux et Origo) Offertory choral piece: Confirma Hoc by C. Rossini - got it from Rossini's Exaltate Deum from 1940s. We also got through five verses of the Latin Vespers hymn Veni Creator Spiritus. Communion choral piece: same as for Ordinary Form Masses - Beata Nobis Gaudia (Bardos). Which I just discovered yesterday is, in its original form, a Latin chant hymn for Lauds on Pentecost. We also sang Regina Caeli, followed directly by the same postlude. So no English hymns for us at this Mass.

This was the 11 AM Mass - 9:15 was with Men's chant schola singing the sequence, Graduale Offertory and Communio. Top tenor was absent, so we didn't get to sing If Ye Love Me with the men.
The only problem with Pentecost is having to chose between the Bach prelude/postlude (including the 10 minute ornamented chorale as prelude) and the Durufle. Whichever I pick, I miss the other!
LAMBILOTTE all around... I'm sure that it's my favorite English hymn, period.
For me it has a personal significance, tied to the saintly pastor of the parish of my adolescence... but everyone seems to love it -- what is it exactly that makes it so wonderful?
Interesting. Perfect marriage between opening text, subtext represented through "so/so/so DO____" Think of all the works that use a three "quaver" propulsion into a strong beat one....Beethoven 5th, The strife is o'er...., "and I will raise.....(oops that just slipped out) and so forth.
Entrance Hymn: Come Holy Ghost, Creator Blest - LAMBILLOTTE Entrance Antiphon: The Spirit of the Lord - LCM Sequence: English Offertory Antiphon: Confirm, O God - LCM Communion Antiphon: They Were All Filled with the Holy Spirit - LCM Communion: Veni Creator - Asola Meditation: Regina Caeli - Chant Recessional: Come, O Holy Spirit - HYMN TO JOY Post Lude: Immaculate Mary
'Wonderful' is the last modifier I would think of for this stodgy ta.ta.ta.Ta...ta.ta.ta.Ta...ta.ta.Ta- - Ta.ta.ta.TA....... tune. I always wonder why it has such a crowd of admirers. I was really shocked that we sang it at Walsingham instead of quite a number of excellent tunes and texts that might have been chosen. It is an absolutely boring 'crowd pleaser'.
If, though, I had to choose between Lambillotte and 'Immaculate Mary, Our Hearts are on Fire', which is worse by many miles (at least 10,000), I would choose L.
And, Advocatus: I see no reflection of the mode VIII Veni creator tune in it other than the signature rising perfect fourth.
For another tune, perhaps, but LAMBILOTTE's tune is more folksy than courtly.
Now, it would be quite fun to tease a *mazurka* out of the thing. (come Ho-LEE Ghost....cre-a-TOR blest....) - we could say avoiding the tonic accent was an homage to chant...
