Besides being the parish musician, my job requires me to teach General Music from K-8 in the parish school. My 40 minute classes usually consist of practicing the songs for the weekly school Mass, a little of the Ward Method, and material from the textbook for each class. Hardly ever use rhythm instruments. Just wondering what others might do.
Actually, that's my primary profession. I am a trained music teacher with a State license.
We use a regular music textbook, the kind you'd find in a public school. I teach K-5 general music, a children's schola for the school Masses, and I am also the middle school band director. I teach quite a number of things in addition to the lessons from the book: my primary focus with the program is music literacy. I teach the students fixed DO solfeggio, takadimi rhythm method, recorders starting in 3rd grade, and starting in 3rd grade we focus on composers and their major works. My curriculum actually covers all of the State standards and includes opportunities for the students to compose and create their own music.
I teach far more than that in reality but it's too much to include in one post.
