Inspiration for the Kyrie of Dumont's Messe Royale?

While practicing the Salve, Sancta Parens for this Sunday, I noticed that it has the same opening motif as the Kyrie of Missa Regia I (Messe Royale) by Dumont. Since Salve Sancta Parens is the same melody as the Introit for Epiphany, Ecce advenit Dominator Dominus, the thought occurred that perhaps the antiphon Ecce advenit with its themes of royalty and kingship, was the inspiration for Missa Regia I, although they are in different modes.

At any rate, they do complement each other nicely. so the Messe Royale might be a good Mass setting to use with Salve, Sancta Parens or Ecce advenit.

  • I have also noticed similarities to that song with the Kyrie of the Missa de Angelis. Especially in jumps and conclusions.
