Yes, the opening phrase in the lower three parts is, precisely, soldiers on detail. "aperuit" does just that: opens wide. The alto line undoes, at the end, what it does at the beginning: lancea latus ejus:: et aqua.
Quite lovely and very useable. I would like to use this when we celebrate the Feast of the Most Precious Blood the first Sunday in July; as it is also the communio for the votive mass of the Most Precious Blood.
