Gesu Catholic Church, located in downtown Miami, Florida, is looking for a full-time director of sacred music for the weekend and special liturgies. A qualified candidate will be a skilled organist and conductor, able to serve as cantor and organize and develop choirs for the Sunday Masses. Gesu Church is a beautiful, historic Church founded by the Jesuits in 1896. It is the oldest Catholic Church in Miami, and has been beautifully renovated and restored. There are five weekend Masses, as follows: Saturday, 4:00 p.m., Sunday, 8:30 a.m. (Bilingual), 10:00 a.m. (Spanish), 11:30 a.m. (English), and 1:00 p.m. (Spanish). We are looking for someone with a background and interest in developing a music program featuring Gregorian chant and traditional sacred music, with a bachelor’s degree or preferably a master’s degree in music. This is a full time position with a base salary of $35,000 plus health care, and a full benefits package. In addition to the foregoing, free housing in the form of a one bedroom apartment with free parking is provided on the Church property. The apartment comes with appliances, although it is unfurnished, and has also been recently renovated. Also, there will be additional opportunities to earn compensation by providing music at weddings, and on average, Gesu currently schedules one wedding per weekend, although there is demand for more. Fluency in Spanish, though helpful, is not required, although candidates should be able to sing or chant relevant Mass parts and a few hymns in Spanish.
