The more I think about that, and reread it, the more frustrating it is. You are right, Kathy. When I started my current job, last August, I introduced a few Latin propers here and there when I cantored, just for variety, ease of planning, and as a way to introduce myself. I also had a few English chants, like the Lumen Christi propers. I realized that for pastoral reasons the Latin chant was a bit too much too quickly for them, and I didn't give translations, so I respect that. However, when people would tell me that they hated the chant because it sounds like a funeral, all I could think was, "Have you been to a funeral here?" Nothing about the funerals here was chant-like. I realize that they meant they didn't find any "life" in the chants, but seriously, how can people's view of music be so dark? And yet, how could they know better? Now, hopefully, they are learning, if I am doing my catechesis correctly.
