Par for the course, isn't it? If certain parties are aghast at something their erstwhile hero has done they will naturally assume that he did it under duress, had a lapse in mental capacity, was the victim of a wicked plot by his enemies, was out-maneuvered by powerful special-interest bureaucrats, his predecessor is being unkind and pulling strings in shadowed back rooms, a palace coup is afoot, or who knows what. It's just a given, isn't it? He really can't have done it because it pleased him so to do.
It's well worth remembering that several persons close to our pontiff have said of him: 'this man is afraid of nothing and no one'. He does make his own decisions.
