We will be chanting the Passion on Good Friday, with two lay cantors and the priest singing Jesus. There is some question about who should sing the opening "The Passion of our Lord..." Logically, it would be the one telling the story, that is, the narrator. However, the gospel at other times is proclaimed by a deacon or priest. Does the fact that the opening is assigned to the narrator assume the tradition of three deacons? Should the priest in the role of Jesus do it in this case? Or is it OK for the lay cantor singing the Narrator to do it?
