Decent Music in Las Vegss @ Our Lady of Las Vegas

I went to Mass this evening in Las Vegas and was pleasantly surprised for once.
They used WLP as their missal of choice and sang the Ordinary in Latin.

The music was a good mix of traditional and contemporary, and the contemporary was done nicely and was not over the top.
The DM was also the organist who did a very nice job ( not too loud not too soft).

Although they did not do any propers at the Sat evening Mass the director told me they do some of his own settings of the communion with the scola on Sundays (8am and 11am).

I look forward to attending Mass at Our lady of Las Vegas next time I'm in town in February.

  • good mix of traditional and contemporary,

Surely this means "All traditional, and no contemporary"?

Remember that the Mass isn't a cafeteria buffet or something like it.

    Chris,

Thanks for the comment. I travel to Vegas twice per year and all the churches to date have been all contemporary all the time. It was a nice change of pace to have at least one parish doing some traditional music thus my comment.

We take what growth we can and try to build on it. Positive steps are always a good thing and should be celebrated and promoted. IMO

I have run into some pretty bad music in Las Vegas also and will certainly check this place out the next time I'm in town on a Sunday or Holy Day.

Las Vegas put a stake thru NPM and my relationship.
    Deo gratias.

It's all about quality, not year composed.

"All or nothing" is not a very straight path to "Sacred music in every parish".
  • Agreed on the quality aspect. I don't hear any of the "my little pony" hymns at our church, but repertoire goes into recent day, and it is always very beautiful. Granted, a lot of what we play is of the "classics", the newer stuff is of quality and beauty.
  • From the website of the music program at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, Columbus, OH:

While Renaissance polyphony forms the core of its repertoire, the Cathedral Choir has received accolades for its performances of romantic and twentieth century pieces, as well. The choir's repertoire of Byrd, Palestrina, and Tallis is balanced by music of Herbert Howells, Maurice Duruflé, Frank Martin, and Pierre Villette.

I like the language used there about the repertoire being "balanced." I would be quite bored with only chant or only polyphony after a while.

The same goes for congregational music; if it's worthy, it's worthy, whether written in 1840 or 1996.

    No.

Any other years are fine. But not those two in particular.

I think we all know what he meant by "contemporary".
  • PGA,

"Contemporary", like "Alternative" describes a style of music, not the year of its composition. I agree that year of composition shouldn't be an automatic declaration of quality (or lack of it).
  • Richard,

Remember that - modern economic theories notwithstanding - our duty is to be servants of the liturgy, not its slave-masters.

That being said, given the state of Catholic music in America, some progress may be all that one can reasonably hope to attain, at least in the short term.

I am sometimes tempted to emulate St Boniface (if I'm remembering correctly): "Henceforth burn what you have worshipped, and worship what you have burned."

It's not always the best method, but it is tried far too infrequently.

Um, I should set fire to my WTC and adore some old newspapers?
