• Took the plunge & attempted to chant the Mass today. (Just the parts that never change. Um, "ordinaries"? Kyrie, Gloria, Holy-Holy, etc.) Went over some of the trickier parts very briefly with the congregation & choir. I was anticipating stoney silence & shuffles of discomfort. You won't believe what happened.

    They sang.

    THEY SANG!

(Oops. Sorry. Not supposed to use cap locks...)

    Great news!!! Yes, Ordinaries.

I am very glad that you did it. Did you use the ICEL Ordinary?

There are three distinct Tennessee accents - well, sort of. Mountain in the northeast, more southern in the Nashville area, and distinctly deep south in Memphis. In my Knoxville area, many families that have been here two hundred years or more (mine) have no noticeable accent at all. Would you have us all sound like valley girls? LOL.

Many of our native families are well-travelled and well-educated. Granted, we don't have northeastern accents - that means we are still intelligible - but are not very different from the accents you will hear reading the evening news on network TV. Regional accents are disappearing at an alarming pace.

  • A slight caution...there may be Monday morning complaint calls to the pastor about the change in the music. Someone's got to hate what you did and will go to Father.

What does this mean? It means you are making progress!
  • It was the ICEL English Mass, available to us through the CCCB in a little book called Celebrate in Song. It also has three new Mass settings written by Canadian composers but they stink without instrumentation. (The settings. Not the composers.)

Now then, I have to say, we probably will not get the same response all year round. Once the swarms of American tourists have all gone home, our little parish is on its own.

God bless America, and all that.

Ukulele Fury looked worried at yesterday's music meeting, until I told them the chanted Mass will only be used when there are no instruments. They have instruments. In droves.

I don't know about this. I would suggest that you consider giving the "instrumentalists" the four hymns; continue chanting the ordinaries, psalm and alleluia. Because the ICEL chants are simple they will be more "inclusive" of everyone's singing ability. They will add simplicity and beauty to the Mass. The chants will also be a more consistent choice, because, with or without musicians, you can have the same setting all year around. I think people in the pews appreciate it when they recognize the music at Mass. It is the "instrumentalists" who feel like they constantly need to change things to create interest, but there is enough interest in the prayers of the Missal.
  • melofluent - Ukulele Fury is our Saturday Night choir. They consist of a very beautiful and dedicated (and large) extended Pilipino family. They utilize an assortment of instruments, including a Ukulele.
