St. Mary Star of the Sea Director of Music/Organist 2014 Recruitment Campaign Job Description and Requirements Outline www.stmarystarmusicsearch.com Responsibilities include: 1) Provide organ music for Mass schedule (currently4 weekend Masses consisting of a Saturday Vigil and 3 Sunday Masses (may vary slightly during summer months)); plan and produce music for cantors, choir, organ, and congregation. 2) Rehearse and conduct the Sunday morning Choir Mass with a well-established and capable adult volunteer choir of approximately 25 voices. Choir rehearsals currently occur preceding the Choir Mass and as scheduled for special events and liturgical seasons. 3) Other extra services for special Masses typical of the Catholic church year: currently consisting of Holy Days of Obligation, Sacred Triduum, Monthly School Mass, School Graduations. 4) Encourage and lead the parish in participating more fully in the liturgical singing at all Masses and in particular the Choir Mass. 5) Provide music for weddings and funerals (extra compensation) – per year: approximately 10 to 20 weddings and 40 to 50 funerals. 6) Schedule cantors and other musicians as needed for Masses and rehearsals. Position requirements and expectations: 1) Preferably Roman Catholic with knowledge and proficiency in the Roman Catholic liturgy and in the selection of liturgically and venue-appropriate music and choral pieces. 2) Both formally trained and experienced in choral conducting and in sacred organ performance. 3) Experienced in working with, growing and developing an adult, volunteer choir; receptive to an open and participative organizational structure. Open-minded and flexible. 4) Expected to develop and expand the capabilities of not only this talented group of singers, but of all people who attend St. Mary Star of the Sea (regardless of skill levels), many of whom participate in this choir and all who participate in the pews because of their appreciation of performing exceptional and challenging sacred choral pieces and understanding more fully our rich Catholic music heritage. 5) Expected to review the hymns and anthems the choir has performed over the past several seasons, understanding the musical choices, styles, repertoire, period, complexity/level of choral difficulty, etc. and to develop a plan to build and develop upon that past experience. 6) A good motivator, adept at building a strong and cohesive choral organization. 7) Creative, imaginative, and energetic. 8) Bachelor of Music required or higher degree. 9) Direct, positive work experience as Director of Music and Organist at a Roman Catholic Church including choral conducting, organ performance, church/sacred music. www.stmarystarmusicsearch.com Email to: starsearch@stmarystarmusicsearch.com
