Does anyone know any German Marian Hymns? (and where they might be found) I just received a request from a friend who is looking for one to sing for a funeral. Thanks in advance!
This may be too associated with Christmas, (can't recall the translation,) but O Maria Hilf is lovely and beloved. I think it may be a translation of Ave Maris Stella.
"Gegrüßet seist du, König" is what they use instead of Hail Holy Queen. It's in the same meter, but the melodic stucture is a bit more interesting. I'll pull out my Gotteslob later and see what I can find.
"Maria, breit den Mantel aus" might be appropriate for a funeral, Gotteslob 595. You can find the text in the german Wikipedia, and the melody with organ setting (to be precise, an arrangement for organ and flutes) on this site from the diocese of Passau.
To be even more precise, a setting for organ, flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxophones, horns, euphonium, trombones and tuba. At least that's what the included parts are for, probably just to cover all instrumental bases.
I found a version with text and lyrics combined, plus other marian hymns from Kevelaer, a german pilgrimage site. Maria breit den Mantel aus is on page 27, and there are also other marian hymns in it, such as Gegrüßet seist du Königin, Maria dich lieben, Meerstern ich dich grüße (an adaptation of Ave maris stella) and Ave Maria zart. Everything with notes from page 20 is a marian hymn.
