Pietro Yon's Veni Domine for SATB Choir
  • Hello!

I remember a piece from my childhood: 'Veni Domine' by Pietro Yon for SATB choir and Tenor soloist. Has anyone seen that around? Is it now in public domain? Much obliged!
  • If anyone finds this, do please let me know. I was introduced to Yon's output only recently by a Protestant organist who has an unfashionable enthusiasm for it.

Should I ever again be required to sit through a sermon by some unreconstructed Liberation Theologian or other, I will be strongly tempted to break the spell of his ranting with this Yon masterpiece, supposing that I have acquired the necessary chops to render it:

RJStove, I say why wait until you've acquired the chops! Just do it. That reminds me of the anecdote told of Sir John Goss:

"One of his students, John Stainer, was not always so reverential about his teacher. He later recalled the occasion on which he and the young Arthur Sullivan succumbed to laughter when Goss absent-mindedly walked across the pedals of the organ during a service, before he realized that he was the cause of the alarming thunderings which were frightening the congregation and putting a temporary pause in the sermon."

JIF, ditto for me on the interest in Yon's "Veni Domine."

  • Good old Sir John Goss! The choir in Melbourne where I regularly sing bass (I am indeed the only bass there), when not playing the organ at yet another Melbourne parish, included Goss's "Praise My Soul The King of Heaven" melody as the final hymn this morning. It is a composition of which I never tire, and I can say the same for O Savior of the World, which still turns up hereabouts now and again.
