Justorum Animae (liturgical question)
  • We just did Justorum Animae for our morning Mass and afterwards our priest came up to me and said that it was for All Souls Day and not All Saints Day. He was fine with it and said it would be fine for tonight. Am I in the wrong for doing it on All Saints? I have been known to be wrong before.
  • You did it correct. The offertory Iustorum animæ is to be sung on All Saints Day. See the Graduale Romanum p. 620. The chant does not appear as one of the choices for All Souls Day.

  • Thank you! I don't know why I was questioning myself on that one. Now I feel better.
  • You are correct that it is the Offertory for All Saints.
Perhaps the confusion is the text, which is now often used in the OF as one of the readings for a funeral mass.
  • Ah! Father correctly associated funerals with times when people need prayers for the repose of their souls, and the modern oddity treats funerals and canonization as one ceremony.
