proper of time vs proper of saints?

I'm a bit confused.... The GR has listings for the full propers for all the saints feasts, including the memorials... Does that mean that at daily masses, the propers should be from the proper of saints nearly every day, even on memorials?
  • I'm assuming you mean in the OF.

It's basically up to the priest which Mass he celebrates each day, whether he uses the proper of the saints' days or of the ferial days. It's my experience that they mix and match, too. I usually see everything from the weekday of OT for a ferial day, just the prayers (but not the readings) for obligatory memorials, and both readings and prayers for feasts and solemnities. That's not an official setup, but it's what I'm used to seeing.

Most memorials are selected from the common, anyway.

Aren't there some guidelines in the GIRM about when the propers are required and when they are merely optional?

Don't resort to the Common of Holy Men and Women too often.

I mean here. But it discusses the readings and the orations, but for the chants, it just refers back to the general guidelines, instead of giving guidance based on the calendar.
