Hi all, the parish I work for has an elaborate audio recording system, but the mics are mainly directional mics for speaking, not for singing. I would like to record a CD of the choir, but would need to purchase a high quality mic that I could place at a distance and that could capture the sound from all directions. Have any of you done this before? Any advice? thanks
What platform are you using to record- multitrack reel, cassette, hard drive, computer/software-based, portable hand held digital, iPhone or iPad, etc. Makes a big difference, as well as whether you're using any other sound alteration devices, compression, digital ambiance/modeling, etc.
Musicians' Friend is a good source with generally good prices, but I also like to use Sweetwater.com for my audio equipment. They have excellent people who can probably recommend the right mic for the right price for your situation. (Didn't mean to make it sound like a commercial!)

Believe it or not some Rode NT5 work so well with choirs. I have a stereo pair and its amazing on a choir, I normal use it for overheads on a drumset in the studio, or for an upright bass but it is also very good inside a church for the choir.
