Question @ this coming Sunday in the Extraordinary Form

    Is the Feast of the Dedication of the Church of St. Michael an optional commemoration? I see on the Institute of Christ the King's website both the 19th Sunday after Pentecost is listed, and the Feast of St. Michael is listed as the Patronal feast at the Oratory in Wassau, so I can't tell if the Feast of St. Michael is mandatory or not.

    Any help with this would be much appreciated.

    The Dedication of the Church of St. Michael the Archangel is a 1st class feast and therefore is celebrated on Sunday, Sept 29, instead of the the 19th Sunday after Pentecost which is a 2nd class liturgical day. However the Mass of the 19th Sunday is celebrated on ferias during the following week unless an optional votive Mass is celebrated.

    The Institute's Sacred Music page says, "The files are roughly organized by calendar day, which simplifies locating propers for upcoming celebrations. But please note: It is absolutely necessary to consult a liturgical calendar or Ordo to determine which Mass is to be celebrated on a given day."

    Thank you so much! There's been some confusion here, and it's good to have it resolved even though the propers for St. Michael's feast day are an uphill climb, compared to the propers for the 19th Sunday which we rehearsed instead.

    We'd better get cracking on those propers. Thanks again.
